For anyone wishing to experience the wonder of natural flight,
hang gliding has much to commend itself. Hang gliders
fly slower than a conventional glider (aeroplane without motor!)
but can manage stronger winds or turbulence than a paraglider
(parapente / foot launchable soaring parachute). Hang gliders
have flown in excess of 700 km (400 miles) with height gains
exceeding 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) and in many ways represent
the greatest emulation of pure flight by humankind so far.
The safety record of hang gliding is generally good but the
risk of serious injury that can arise in an accident makes a
safe and comprehensive learning syllabus and methodology essential.
In addition the 'student' pilot must endeavour to learn as much
as possible and develop good knowledge and judgement about a
variety of subjects ranging from weather forecasting to human
factors, aerodynamics and correct execution of flight skills.
Most importantly, the student pilot must experience how good
control 'feels' -and to apply the above knowledge so that good
control can be systematically achieved, maintained and developed
over a greater range of circumstances.
Because hang gliding has not been adequately promoted and taught
in the past, the sport is in decline in many areas. Meanwhile
paragliding has grown because it may be learnt rapidly. With
either discipline rapid progress should not be at the expense
of comprehensive development of knowledge and skill, but any
unnecessary delay to the learning progress of a student should
be avoided. Therefore a're-engineering' of the learning
methodology for hang gliding is necessary.
Hang Gliding New Zealand Ltd can offer the following elements
to hang gliding instruction that will assist the hang gliding
student pilot in their progress:
- The benefit of involement in hang gliding since its earliest
beginnings in New Zealand more than 30 years ago.
- Sites that facilitate teaching throughout all learning
areas.
- Superb weather.
- Competitive pricing.
- Supplementary lessons with a tandem instructor.
- Tow & foot launched teaching methodologies to optimise
teaching, learning and skill development opportunities for
improved safety and effectiveness.
- Internationally recognised qualifications issued to students.
As instruction must be coordinated with other demands and is
weather dependant (and the learning requirements vary from one
person to another) rates are only available by discussion. |
